Whale Watching

Hervey Bay is blessed with being the favourite stopover for Humpback Whales migrating between their main feeding grounds in the Antarctic and breeding grounds of the Barrier Reef. There is no other place on the East Coast that the humpback whales can be seen consistently each and every day, so much so that all trips offer a guarantee that you will see the whales and offer a free return trip should this occur.

The Bay is so special that the great percentage of these super special Whales visit annually and we now have photographed and identified 2nd and 3rd generations of whales in the Bay. With generaly calm water, sheltered from the ocean swells and free from major predators, the Humpback Whales use the Bay to socialize, mate, rest, feed and strengthen the new calves ready for the big journey. Once they leave the safe Hervey Bay waters and head out into open ocean waters on their return to the icy Antarctic Waters, the Humpback Whales are in predator territory, Orca's or Killer Whales are on the hunt.

It is this that makes Hervey Bay the Premier boat based Whale Watching location in Australia, and as many visitors tell us , even the World.
The whales are comfortable and at ease and over the last 20 years have at times become equally interested in us humans and some spectacular interactions occur in Hervey Bay between these giant ocean mariners and the people who flock to meet them.

As always, remember this is wildlife, to be respected and understood, they are spectacular but have their own lives to lead and at times are busy doing their own thing. Remembering this makes it even more spectacular when they do put on a show, for these creatures are wild and free...just as they should be.

For whale watchers there is no better place than Hervey Bay to meet the humpback whales, the protection of Fraser Island offers comfort for both whales and passengers with the backdrop of World Heritage Fraser Island being both the reason and an added bonus.

We have a range of vessels to choose from offering the choice of half day or day trips. Trips with the intimacy of a small group on a sailing boat to large purpose built vessels with underwater viewing rooms. Every trip out to the whales in Hervey Bay offers a unique experience, so why not try more than one while you are here. Whales have a slightly different and more natural calendar to ours so precise dates are not available but as a guide :  Whale watching season begins around Mid July each year and Ends in Late October to Early November.

So remember, if you care about Whales, come to Hervey Bay to enjoy your experience.
Watching Whales in the Southern Open Ocean is rough on you and the Humpback Whales,
who are often listening out for and trying desperately to avoid predatory packs of Killer Whales.
